What is Endometriosis?
•Posted on March 22 2023
In honor of Endometriosis Awareness Month...
I am here today to talk to you about a medical condition that affects millions of women across the world, including myself, that is the beast better known as, endometriosis. This chronic disease affects 1 in 10 women worldwide and that number is growing every single day. It is a painful and often debilitating disease that can significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this condition, so I wanted to take the opportunity to shed some light on it and raise awareness.
What is it?
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, onto other organs in the pelvis, such as (but not limited to) the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or bladder. This tissue can cause inflammation, scarring, and severe pain, especially during menstruation or sexual intercourse. It can also lead to infertility.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of endometriosis vary from woman to woman, and some may not even experience any symptoms at all. However, it is crucial to recognize the signs, such as painful periods, heavy bleeding, chronic fatigue, and pain during sex or bowel movements.
What to do if you know someone experiencing symptoms or think it could be you?
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of endometriosis, please do not hesitate to seek medical attention. There are many treatment options available, including pain management, hormone therapy, and surgery. With proper care and support, women with endometriosis can lead fulfilling lives.
Is there a cure?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for endometriosis, and it can take years for a woman to receive a proper diagnosis. I suffered 21 years without a proper diagnosis. Many women are often misdiagnosed or dismissed by healthcare professionals, which can be incredibly frustrating and demoralizing. It is essential that we raise awareness of this condition and work towards better education and understanding of it.
I hope that this brief overview of endometriosis has helped shed some light on this condition. Let us continue to raise awareness, support those who are affected, and work towards better education, understanding, and treatment of endometriosis.
Love Always,
